Members of Thornbury Allotment Association tend their plots at Daggs Allotments at the top of the High Street in Thornbury, South Gloucestershire. The allotments are administered and run for the people of Thornbury by Thornbury Town Trust. It is possible to trace the origins of allotments back over 200 years, they derive from the enclosure legislation of the 18th and 19th centuries and the word 'allotment' originates from land being allotted to an individual under enclosure award.  Enclosures were used by the richer landowners to stop the poor grazing their animals on common land. The enclosure acts had their origins back in the 1500's and it was in 1546 that Thomas Dagg gave the present field to Thornbury where it remained the property of the borough under control of a Bailiff and the Mayor. This continued until the Borough was dissolved together with the Bailiff and Alderman by the Municipal Corporations Act 1883. In 1890 the Thornbury Town Trust was originated to take over these Charities under the auspices of the Charity Commissioners and has continued to administer the allotments until the present time. We are therefore fortunate enough to tend what must be some of the oldest allotments in the country. If you would like to be added to the waiting list for a plot you should apply to Mrs M Powell, Clerk of the Town Trust, her phone number can be found on the gates of the allotments.

There are many benefits for members of T.A.A. and it is not necessary to be a plot holder to become a member. As a member you will be able to buy seeds at a discounted price and purchace some gardening items from the association shop at very competitive prices. The shop stocks netting, fleece, growmore etc. We also have guest speakers and we make visits to places of interest. If you would like to become a non-plotholder member please contact Ray Fulker membership secretary, any committee member or you can leave a message with your details in the guest book of this website. Membership costs just a couple of pounds a year.
